What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos : My Top Ten Tips

It can be difficult to decide how you would like to dress for your engagement photo session. I've found over the years that quite often the bride to be makes great choices, the groom to be often struggles!

Your engagement photos are a perfect opportunity for you to express who you are as a couple, so it's important to have fun! Having confidence and feeling chemistry with your partner is what the shoot is all about. Don't worry if you don't look perfect. A few things out of place is not a big deal. Your passion for each other shining through is what will make your photos look fantastic - not the perfect outfits or haircuts and makeup!

Consider these ten tips to help you decide what to wear.

Theme and Dress Code

Choose a style for the photo session. Do you like a classic look like polos and khakis or top and skirt or pants? Are you a fashionable couple who are always on trend? Are you sporty, love to workout together? Do you want a casual look or more formal? Last word here - be comfortable!

Color Scheme

You don't have to be perfectly color matched, but it's nice to stay within the same or similar color tones. Are you into earth tones like burgundy, olive green, and light browns? Or a more neutral palette like navy blue, khaki and white? Maybe you're looking for a more spring/pastel look? The seasons may be a good place to start when choosing your color scheme, but stick with what you love as a couple - I want you both to feel super comfortable!

Layers

If we're shooting in the cooler seasons bring layering options that can easily be taken on or off. Likewise in warmer weather, light shirts or tops with an added blazer or sport jacket that can be put on for the photo and quickly taken off. This will create different looks without having to completely change outfits.

The addition of hats, scarves, umbrellas, parasols, jewelry and shoes will also help create soem different looks at your photo session.

Stand Out With Solid Colors

Solid dresses and monochrome matching sets area great choices for ladies. Solid color shirts for the guys. Wearing solid colors makes you stand out wherever we are shooting and will make you pop in the photo.

Don't be afraid to go a little bold with bright yellow, pink or red dresses. For the guys, dress shirts or polos with solid colors like light blue, pale green or light pinks always work well.

Patterns and Plaids

If you love plaids and patterns, but want to look great on camera, opt for more subtle prints that might appear as one color from a distance. Strips, polka dots and plaids - choose smaller versions of the prints.

Keep it Classic

Choosing the classics always works well and they look classy forever. You don't need to reinvent the wheel here. A nice button down dress shirt for the guys with a fitted jacket or blazer, dark jeans or dress pants always look great for men.

Writing and Logos

Logos and printed words speak to us. Unfortunately it's often the first thing people look at in photos instead of focussing on you, the beautiful couple. Try to avoid wearing logo attire or clothing with wording. If it's unavoidable not to worry as I can usually remove most in editing your photos, but not all.

Mobile Phones and Wallets

Try to avoid stuffing your pockets with car keys, phones and wallets. I know we all have to carry them so I've made provisions for that. When we set up for your photo session I have a safe, rolling, camera case that my couples usually leave their stuff in. My assistant will help you with making sure your pockets are not bulging out.

Hair Ties - Warning

Ladies (and often men with man buns) carry or wear hair ties. At your engagement, pre-wedding or post-wedding photo session I'll try to remind you to take the hair tie off your wrist! I want all the attention to be on your gorgeous engagement ring or wedding band.

Bring Touch-up Makeup

It's a good idea to bring a little touch-up makeup, lip stick, lip gloss etc. I always have blotting papers on hand at my photos sessions for both the bride to be and the groom to be.

Being a PPA certified professional photographer I'll professionally edit your photos and remove pimples, blemish or blotches and make other adjustments to enhance your photographs.

About me

The thing I love most about wedding photography is being around lots of people, family members, close friends and loved ones. Being British and creative I bring a different perspective to my photography. I’ve been told my British sense of humor shows in the images, however I am very serious about my craft.

I love the creative outlet that photography gives me access to. I love working out and love to run and have completed the Boston Marathon four times. Some of my favorite things in the world are my wife, kids & family, our 2 rescue Pugs “Bodie & Spanky”, old tee shirts, jeans, cowboy boots, tea, coffee a decent IPA. I love movies, binge watching TV shows and looking at art, listening to all kinds of music and of course a good laugh with friends new and old! to name a few.

Timeless Photographs

All of my wedding collections include a custom designed, wedding album for you both and your future generations to enjoy forever.

10 Questions to Ask your Prospective Wedding Photographer - Atlanta Georgia

Recently I was listening to a photography webinar that was specific to sales and customer service. While listening I started thinking about great questions for a Bride and Groom to ask a professional photographer they were considering. I came up with a really long list, I’ve narrowed it down to the ten below.

Are you available on my wedding date?

If no, don't waste anymore time! you have to keep looking for the right one. It reminds me of a somewhat related blog post I wrote earlier this year Three Important Things…

Will you, (the person you’re speaking with) be the photographer at my wedding?

Make sure that you talk with the photographer and connect with him or her, feel comfortable asking for what you want. Communication on your Wedding Day is very important. Look here for more info Atlanta Wedding Photography Additionally, you may want to make sure that all of your “special shots” are taken care of and not missed by a message not getting to the right person.

What camera system do you use? Do you have back up cameras in case of a malfunction?

You may want to make sure that your Wedding Day Photographer has professional grade cameras and lenses plus back ups. With the big names Nikon and Canon, there are other fantastic professional cameras being used, ask see samples of the work they have produced with their preferred system. Additionally, it’s might be a good idea to find out if they use a lighting system for evening or low light situations.

Are you a technical photographer or creative, what’s your style?

Ideally you need a photographer who is technically proficient and also creative - let’s be honest the great wedding photos are the ones that capture the emotions of the day and are exposed correctly, composed correctly and processed correctly. Documentary or Photo-journalistic styles may be your choice, or you may need a more traditional look. I like the idea of a combination of a more formal look for the family and documentary style as the day unfolds. It’s also important that your photographer has the ability to talk with you both, your family, wedding planner and other vendors during the day to ensure that every opportunity to capture great photos as the situations dictate are taken advantage of.

How many years have you been photographing weddings?

You may also ask about product and fashion abilities, as there will be rings, shoes, cufflinks, cakes, flowers, a Wedding Gown, Tuxedos etc. to be documented that have nothing to do with the people that will need to be photographed on the day.

Can I see samples of your wedding, engagement, portrait, and wedding day details photography?

Along with this question you should confirm that all of the images you are being shown were taken by the photographer you are speaking with. Look for a complete wedding day start to finish, also if you are having them take care of your Engagement Photo Session, check their engagement photography to avoid disappointment or misunderstanding.

Do you have liability and equipment insurance?

I know it’s rare, but things can go awry, All vendors should have insurance to cover the what ifs. Some venues require all vendors to have insurance coverage - check well before your wedding day.

Are you a member of a professional association?

It’s so important nowadays with technology spilling into the creative arena that your photographer keeps up with the ever changing technological improvement and uses them to creatively capture your day. In the USA the Professional Photographers of America based in Atlanta, GA are the oldest and largest association specific to photography in the world.

Can you stay longer if the reception runs later and how much would that cost?

Very important to establish this up front rather than on the day. Make sure that your contract clearly says what to expect if the wedding runs later that planned.

Do you have any type of certification or education in photography?

A certified professional photographer will have the ability and competence to shoot your wedding and produce great images without you having to worry how things may or may not turn out. Also, consider asking about post-wedding processing of images, does the photographer do it or is someone else responsible for that. Be clear about your expectations for the photography, on-line galleries, wedding albums and wall art etc. Always ask what’s included and what’s an additional cost.

Waterfalls and Engagement Shoots

Thought I would share some images from Danielle and Nick’s recent Engagement Shoot at an out of the way swimming hole and waterfall in North Georgia. It was a warm spring evening and the light by the waterfall was fading quickly, so I had to work fast. I added one large white reflector and an off camera Speed-light with a light defusing modifier just to open up the shadows a little. I carefully positioned them to capture the soft light and ambiance

Danielle and Nick were amazing, they looked great and we were able to shoot some really different and very cool images. They told me “the shoot was a lot of fun”, I agree, and “that they love the finished photographs”. For me, it really doesn't get much better than that.

Enjoy!  - Chris

Wedding Receptions and Families

One of my favorite parts of shooting weddings is the reception. Why? I guess it’s because you never know what might happen in terms of the guests behavior, children misbehaving, adults misbehaving and of course the parent’s & sibling’s tears of joy.
